Sam Bertron, Texas

Background:

The 875MW Sam Bertron plant located just south of Houston in La Porte, TX was built in 1972. It was powered by four gas fired steam turbines and boilers and two gas turbines. The site consists of 144 acres of land with gas pipeline and access to the Houston ship channel.  A former Houston Power & Light asset, Sam Bertron was acquired by NRG around 2005.  Bertron was mothballed in 2011 but brought back into services briefly until it was finally retired.  Genover acquired this plant in Q4 2021.  

Project Execution:

Demolition of the old four steam turbines is underway as well as site cleanup. 

Timeline:  

Project will be completed in late 2022.  

Redevelopment:

The site is in the heart of the Houston Ship channel and surrounded by petrochemical and natural gas industries.  Future use will likely be heavy industrial, tank storage, digital coin mining, digital storage or shipping infrastructure.
